PRESENTATIONS:
Ronnie Gullette on MASS211:  Sponsored by Barnstable County Human Services and United Way.  Part of a nationwide project.  Website www.mass211.org  Phone: 211 or 508-277-3008 E-mail: ronniegullette@comcast.net  A volunteer answers the phone.  MASS211 is a 24/7 service that is anonymous and confidential.  Only ask for your zip code so they put you in touch with services near you.  Available services: list of shelters/food pantries, veterans and disability services, early education and care programs, crisis intervention, mental health services, senior care, official emergency info.  Provides relief for 911.  Can call from cell phone but will reach the 211 service in the State where you are located when calling.
Between meetings, Asa put up the 211 posters around town and distributed 211 brochures as well.
Mary Lee Mantz on Nauset Neighbors:  A new service launched on 2/14/11.  Modeled after Beacon Hill Village in Boston, founded to help keep seniors in their homes as long as possible.  70 Villages nationwide.  NN’s  covers Brewster, Orleans, Eastham, & Wellfleet.
www.nausetneighbors.org/ E-mail: info@nausetneighbors.org/ 508-514-7067.  “One call does it all”.  Services provided by volunteers/screened vendors/network of other senior services in the community such as COA/FISH, etc.  Annual fee - $175 for singles/$225 for households.  Scholarships available if full fee can’t be paid.
Services:  Transportation, Handyman services, Technical support, Miscellaneous household tasks.
Chief Kulhawik will add these two organizations to the PD list of services available to citizens.  MASS211 contacts will be added to the dispatcher’s reference list for quick referral.
Larry DiBona on Neighborhood Watch:  Office now at COA.  Sponsored by the PD, Fire Dept., & COA.  Block Captains keep their eye on their assigned areas, report anything suspicious to PD.  Not all areas of Eastham are covered.  More volunteers needed.  NW is “extra eyes for the PD and Fire Dept.s.”

Al Alfano on Library Building Plans:  Present library has space and longevity issues.  Infrastructure is aging; accessibility needs improvement.  Plans call for renovation of one-floor library space with basement below for storage and a meeting room.  Elevator and HP bathrooms on both levels planned.  Total cost $9.2K.  Trustees applied for $4.7K grant.  Balance of $4.5K will be bonded.  Eileen announced that the Library Building effort just attained 501c3 status 4/19/11.  Hope to raise  $1-2K through tax-deductible donations.

INTERIM CORRESPONDENCE:  1) Open Meeting Law Update received from the Town, re: posting of meetings.

TOWN PROJECTS:  Mac’s Seafood – PACE members noticed two new steps and a platform at Route 6 entrance.  Platform has rails all around.  No ramp in place.  Frank reported that the left side railing is removable and a ramp will be in place within the next two weeks.
Condos Next to Town Hall:  Steve Milliken has purchased the whole property.  He will use one condo as a residence; the rest of the 2 buildings will be office space.  The property is zoned as “mixed use.”
New Construction/Permit Fees:  Two new houses are going up.  Frank has given out Universal Design info with building permits.

BEACHES AND RECREATION:  Mark has been looking at different types of chairs that are now available at lower cost than what we paid for current chairs.  Mark gave us info on a chair that is made in Rhode Island.  PVC pipe construction, cost ~$1,000.  Current chair(s) won’t be auctioned until a new chair is ordered.  $3000 for new chair is in Capital Budget for 2012-2013 Fiscal Year.  Mark plans to visit a place where this chair is in use to check on longevity & maintenance issues.
Off-season use of beach wheelchair: Call Recreation Department.
Sand piles at beaches are removed by mid-May.  Town beaches are used as staging areas for shoring up rock revetments that were compromised by winter erosion.  This is allowed if house was built before 1978 (not sure of this date).  Mark’s good news:  Cooks Brook will have a new bathhouse by end of May.  It will be kept locked;  there will be a cold-water shower.  A HP portapotty will be in place during the summer.  Kay Richardson asked about the location of the portapotty at Great Pond.  She felt that it is difficult to access.  Lori said it’s location is close to the pavement making access easier than if it were farther away from the road.

RE: QUESTION ON NEXT TOWN CENSUS:  PACE would like to ask a question re: how many people in each household are disabled.  The possibility of a separate page, printed by the Town and included with next year’s census form mailing, was raised.  Peggy Kern will follow up on this before the next PACE meeting to see if the Town Clerk will approve this addition to the census mailing.

PACE’s role re: “Model Employer Initiative” – Tabled until next meeting.

PACE ROTATING CHAIRMANSHIP:  Lori Hovenstine will Chair the May meeting.
Duties of the next Chair: 1) Check the PACE mailbox at Town Hall periodically, 2) Make phone calls that need to be made, 3) Plan the meeting Agenda with Secretary (Helen) two-three weeks before the meeting.

NEXT MEETING:  Wednesday, May 25, 2011 in Large Meeting Room, Town Hall, at 1:30 PM.

Respectfully Submitted,

Helen Derman, Secretary
P.A.C.E.
